The IMO Podcast is a series of open and honest conversations with care leavers that gives a voice to the diverse experiences that make up the care population. Each episode we invite someone who’s been in care to talk about anything they like. It’s an opportunity to hear the voices of people who often don’t get the chance to tell their stories, and it’s a chance to inspire and encourage others in similar situations.

In the third episode of series 2, we speak to Max and Brandon about what life is like in a children’s home and their unexpected friendship. They tell us about their first night in care, and why they’re the new Ant and Dec!

There’s a stereotype about care kids as being chaotic, or into crime, or it always means that they’ve had a crap childhood, but it’s not about that. You could be in care for any reason, and I feel like it just gets generalised. People put you in a box when it’s actually your own personal story.

Sometimes, when you meet people and you tell them you’re in care, they sort of think it’s their right to know all about you and why you’re there. […] It makes me upset and quite angry. Why do they want to know why I am where I am? It’s not their place to know, it’s only my business.
